Check printing fees vary by design. All checks are duplicate carbon copy checks and your original checks are retained by the credit union for safekeeping. However, check copies are available upon request. We encourage members to order their checks through the credit union.
If you order your checks somewhere other than the credit union, please be advised that you may not use checks in the 9,000-10,000 series, or in the 80,000-90,000 series. Account Reconciliation Worksheet
Use this form to balance your account.
How to Keep an Account Balanced
What is it?
Matching the amount of money you say you have to the amount the credit union says you have.
Why do I have to do it?
If you don't keep your account balanced, you might spend more money than you have. If that happens, it costs you an insufficient funds fee of $23 for each check, debit card purchase, automatic withdrawal, or ATM withdrawal, and that's just what the credit union will charge. Most stores will also charge a fee of about $25-$30 if your payment to them bounces.
How do I do it?
It's easy - just use the free tools from the credit union. The most important thing is to use the checkbook register we give you, even if you don't plan to write a lot of checks!
The register is where you keep track of your balance - starting with your beginning balance. That's the amount you open your account with (or, if the account has been open a while and you've never kept a register, we can help you determine a beginning balance).
Write down all your transactions - deposits, withdrawals, checks, debit card purchases, and ATM and other automatic withdrawals. You must also record any fees you are charged, like a balance inquiry at the ATM or the cost of your check order.
The best thing to is take a few seconds to record the transaction while the clerk or machine is processing it. You might think you'll remember to do it later, but if you forget, it could be very costly. Just write the date, a description of the transaction, like "Wal-Mart" or "paycheck deposit," or the person you're writing the check to. Then write the amount, and go ahead and do the math. Add deposits or other credits, and subtract withdrawals.
The Most Important Step
So how do you match it to what the credit union says? Using the free Online Bank (or TeleBank if you don't have internet access), you can check your account every few days to see what has cleared through the credit union. Get out your register and compare it to your account history. Put a checkmark beside the transactions that have posted, and look for anything you may have forgotten to record, so you can subtract that from your balance also.
To balance your account, start with the latest balance in your register, after you've subtracted all the transactions and withdrawals up to that point. Then, add to that balance all the amounts that haven't cleared yet (that don't show on your account history in Online Bank). Subtract any credits that haven't posted yet, and your balance should match what the credit union says! Use this worksheet, or we'll be happy to show you how if you need any help.
The Bottom Line
There is no such thing as overdoing it on balancing your account. The more often you do it, the more likely you are to avoid the stress and expense that comes with insufficient funds.
